APS (Advanced Photo System) film uses a 24mm wide colour negative stock, which is a bit skinnier than your standard 35mm. However, it relies on the very same basic chromogenic dye-coupler chemistry for its colours. The big snag is that this film suffers from the same old fading issues as regular 35mm colour negatives. Over the decades, the cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes all fade at different rates, with the cyan typically vanishing the quickest. Given that most APS film hails from between 1996 and 2005, it's now a good 20 to 30 years old, and you can absolutely spot the colour shift.
But APS had a clever trick up its sleeve: a hidden information system. Each roll of APS film includes an IX (Information Exchange) magnetic strip right beside the picture area. This strip logged all sorts of handy bits, like the date, time, your chosen print size (Classic 4×6, HDTV 16:9, or Panoramic), and even exposure details. While some specialised APS scanners can read this and apply it to your digital images, this metadata can get corrupted after years tucked away in an attic in a 1970s semi-detached, making those precious dates and times unreadable.
Then there's the cartridge itself, which is a bit of a nightmare these days. APS film is sealed tight inside a unique cartridge; you can't just wind it back and pull it out like 35mm. Most APS cameras were brilliant back then, automatically advancing and rewinding the film, so you never had to touch it. Grand for convenience at the time, but a right headache for digitising. Getting that film out needs specialist tools and, alas, it means the cartridge won't be the same afterwards. Your average home flatbed scanner won't even look at an APS cartridge.
And finally, the gear needed to play them back is practically extinct. Professional APS scanners, like the Pakon F-235 and Noritsu HS-1800, haven't been made in ages and are getting rarer than hen's teeth. Most of the old photo labs that used to handle APS back in the 2000s have either shut up shop or gone fully digital. So, come 2026, APS is genuinely one of the trickiest formats to get professionally digitised.

Restoring APS film is a bit unusual because a huge chunk of the work actually happens even before we get to the scanning bit. The film is locked away inside a permanent cartridge that’s not easily opened. To get the film out, you either need an APS-compatible scanner that can take the cartridges directly, or a proper specialist tool to crack open the cartridge without doing any damage to the film inside.
Our preferred method is to use the original Pakon F-235. This was Kodak's own dedicated APS scanner, designed specifically to load those sealed cartridges. The Pakon F-235 was the absolute gold standard for APS digitisation in the early noughties, and it’s an incredibly rare beast now. We keep a small fleet of these scanners on hand just for our archival APS jobs.
For those cartridges that just won't load into the Pakon – often because the camera mechanism left them in a funny state – we use a manual extraction tool to carefully open the cartridge in a darkroom. Once the film strip is out, it gets loaded into a Plustek OpticFilm 120, using an adapted APS-specific film holder we've sorted ourselves. The quality of the scan is identical, it just takes a bit longer to do.
If the IX metadata is still readable, we can pull out the date, time, and original print size information and embed it right into your scanned image files. We always respect the Classic, HDTV, and Panoramic print size choices you made with your original camera – Classic frames come out as 3:2, HDTV as 16:9, and Panoramic as wide-format crops.
Once the scanning is done, we get stuck into colour-correcting to fix any fading (especially that pesky magenta shift), we banish dust and scratches, and we deliver each frame in its original aspect ratio, along with a standard 3:2 version.
